MURI Seminar 11/19/2024 : Band Topology on Non-orientable Brillouin Zones
11/19/2024 10:52:27 AM
André Grossi e Fonseca from Massachusetts Institute of Technology will present a talk titled “Band Topology on Non-orientable Brillouin Zones”.
Abstract:
In this talk, I will discuss how topological band theory is affected when the Brillouin zone is a non-orientable manifold, as opposed to the usual case of a torus. I will show that it is possible to modify the topology of the Brillouin zone using momentum-space glide symmetries. This leads to drastic modifications to the topology and chirality of Weyl points, which we have investigated both theoretically in lattice models and experimentally in a photonic platform with synthetic momenta. Time permitting, I will also discuss the novel topological responses of these systems, which bind quantized excitations to various lattice and electromagnetic defects.
